PRIMUM NON NOCERE “first, do no harm” speaks of the advocacy for QUALITY and SAFETY that DR. RAMON ENRICO C. VALERA adheres to in his practice of Aesthetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He attends Plastic Surgery conferences (aesthetic/cosmetic and reconstructive), locally and abroad, to keep himself updated with the latest procedures and techniques. He exchanges views with colleagues, both local and foreign, on cases he has seen and those that he seldom sees. He does his medium and major operations/procedures in the hospital Operating Room.
Why the hospital Operating Room? First, the patient is assured that his/her procedure/operation is done in a sterile environment. Second, the equipments which monitor the well-being of the patient during the time of surgery/operation are present. Third, most of the materials that he (Dr. Valera) may need to do a good surgery/operation, are available. Last but not the least, in case of an emergency situation wherein the well-being of the patient can be compromised (usually arises when the patient is not truthful with the doctor during the consultation/clinical history taking), all the medical specialists who may be needed to improve the patient’s well-being can easily be called.
In case Dr. Valera has to do the procedure/operation in a clinic, he makes sure that the clinic has been sterilized and is equipped to handle the procedure/operation without compromising the safety of the patient.
Based on his experience as a former Head of the Aesthetic Surgery Center and the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of St. Luke’s Medical Center, Quezon City and as Chief of the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital at Sta. Mesa, Manila, he knows that no small detail should be ignored to bring about a SATISFYING, GOOD and SAFE OUTCOME of the procedure/operation.
